The Oerkap in Haarlem was once a driving belt factory. Today, it marks the northern entrance to the city’s historic centre. For centuries, merchant ships passed this point on their way to the busy harbour along the River Spaarne. Nowadays, the Oerkap is a popular restaurant and terrace, event location and offers cultural offices and studio spaces.

Standing proudly on the banks of the Spaarne, Molen De Adriaan was originally built in 1779. The windmill was used for milling grain and
processing wood. After being destroyed by fire in 1932, it was carefully rebuilt and reopened in 2002. Today it is one of Haarlem’s most recognizable landmarks and offers panoramic views over the city.

The Koepel Prison was built in 1901 and is one of the few remaining panopticon prisons in Europe. Its circular design allowed guards to supervise every cell from a single central point. After serving as a prison for more than a century, the building has been transformed into a vibrant centre for education, culture, businesses,
restaurants and a cinema.

The waterfront around Restaurant Zuidam was once a busy industrial area where shipyards, warehouses and trading companies lined the banks of the Spaarne. Goods were loaded and unloaded here every day. Today, the area has become a lively waterfront destination where visitors can enjoy food, drinks and beautiful views of the river and windmill the Adriaan.

Founded in 1784, Teylers Museum is the oldest museum in the Netherlands. Established by the wealthy banker and philanthropist Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, it combines art, science and natural history in one remarkable collection. Many of its galleries and display cabinets have remained almost unchanged for more than two centuries, creating a unique historical atmosphere.

Built in the early twentieth century, the Light Factory supplied electricity to Haarlem during a period of rapid industrial growth. It played an important role in modernising the city. Although electricity is no longer produced here, the beautifully restored industrial building now hosts conferences, concerts, exhibitions and other cultural events.
